The following computers do not support Virtualisation and thus Virtual Machine software such as VMware Workstation and VirtualBox cannot be installed on them:
- Google Chromebooks
- 2020 M1 chip Mac computers, including the M1 MacBook Air, the 13" M1 MacBook Pro, and the M1 Mac Mini
As a result, parts of CyberStart are not easily playable on these devices.
What parts of CyberStart can I play without the Virtual Machine?
The following areas of CyberStart can be played without a Virtual Machine:
- Headquarters base, levels 1 thru 5
- Moon base (all)
Many challenges in levels 6 thru 13 of Headquarters and most challenges in the Forensic base require the use of Linux admin access, scripting tools, terminal tools, and software that currently cannot be run on Chromebooks or M1 Apple products. Additionally, these computers also often don't support using the open source tools of security natively on the host machine.
Unfortunately at this time, users with a Chromebook or M1 Mac product will not be able to fully play CyberStart. We are exploring options to make these parts of CyberStart more accessible for students with these devices, but at present we do not have a timeline for when these options might become available.
